The Wilderness Institute was founded with a clear and inspiring mission: to improve lives through herbal medicine education, the sustainable use of medicinal plants, and the preservation of Zambia's rich traditional herbal knowledge for future generations.

Across Zambia and many parts of Africa, millions of people continue to face challenges in accessing affordable healthcare and sustainable sources of income. Yet our country is blessed with an extraordinary diversity of medicinal plants and centuries of indigenous healing knowledge. These invaluable resources have the potential to transform lives when they are protected, scientifically supported, and used responsibly.

 

The Wilderness Institute is working to make this vision a reality by establishing a leading centre for herbal medicine training, medicinal plant conservation, research, and community development.

Through our programmes, we train students, traditional healers, farmers, women, young people, and aspiring herbal practitioners in:

• Herbal medicine and natural health

• Identification and cultivation of medicinal plants

• Sustainable harvesting and conservation practices

• Processing, value addition, and herbal product development

• Entrepreneurship and income generation through medicinal plant enterprises

 

Our approach combines respected traditional knowledge with modern scientific principles to promote safe, effective, ethical, and environmentally responsible herbal medicine practices.
